MTV, fast food, microwave ovens–we’ve been conditioned to expect to get the things we want now.We’ve become a very impatient society.Whereas, 100 years ago, traveling,it was an endeavor that took months,now there are numerous daily flights from O’Hare to LAX and back again. The world has become smaller, and the time it takes to travel or even to exchange information across continents has gotten shorter and shorter (and in the case of the latter example, it’s become almost instantaneous).

We live in a society where people hope for the quick fix.Winning the lottery, entering yet another sweepstakes, or even buying tickets for the church raffle–these are all ways that we try to get something fast that we haven’t really earned. And the Internet… the Internet is full of get-rich-quick schemes (that are invariably fake). The problem with schemes like these is that they hardly ever work, and we spend all of our time chasing a dream that’s got little chance of coming true.

We’ve advanced to the point in modern society that you don’t have to leave your home for anything anymore. You can work, buy your groceries, pay your bills, and do your banking, all from your computer. These advancements were, not that long ago, almost totally unthinkable. When you remember that the first computers were 50 feet long, 30 feet wide, and weighed almost 30 tons, it’s amazing to reflect upon how far the computer industry has come is a remarkably short span of time.
