And then there's the difficulty of going there every day, attending classes, and doing your homework assignments. While most people make it through high school, there are some who thrive and others who find it a struggle. High school can be tough, and its difficulty often has little or nothing to do with intelligence or ability. The fact is, some people just aren't built to do well at traditional high schools.

The concept of distance education first appeared in the 19th century, when urban and industrial development caused a need for an educated trade and working class. Also fueling this burgeoning new field was the simultaneous rise in printing and postal services. While the courses offered were originally limited primarily to vocational subjects, the array of options eventually become much more varied, including classes in virtually every subject.

The term correspondence course now, however, is largely outdated, having been replaced by the term distance education. Distance education is used to describe any method of teaching where the student does not physically have to be in the classroom. It is a generic term that can cover any type of educational program, whether it be the pursuit of an advanced degree or an advanced training course of some kind, or even a high school completion program.
