The concept of distance education first appeared in the 19th century, when urban and industrial development caused a need for an educated trade and working class. Also fueling this burgeoning new field was the simultaneous rise in printing and postal services. While the courses offered were originally limited primarily to vocational subjects, the array of options eventually become much more varied, including classes in virtually every subject.

In the 19th century, the first correspondence courses appeared.These courses were designed to provide education to people who lived in rural or outlying areas who may not otherwise have been able to avail themselves of educational opportunities. The term correspondence course now, however, is largely outdated, having been replaced by the term distance education. Distance education is used to describe any method of teaching where the student does not physically have to be in the classroom. It is a generic term that can cover any type of educational program, whether it be the pursuit of an advanced degree or an advanced training course of some kind, or even a high school completion program.
