High School Degree

In the last 30 years or so, the number of high school dropouts has decreased by a total of about four percent (from 14 percent to 10 percent). Still, the number of people who don’t finish high school is altogether too high. And that number gets even worse for African Americans and Latinos, with the number approaching three in 10 Latinos not finishing high school.

When a person enters the workforce without a high school degree, the number and quality of jobs available is both paltry and disheartening. These are jobs that don’t offer great pay or benefits. They often require long hours, and there’s little room for advancement. In fact, a recent study states that a person without a high school diploma may expect to earn on average of $7,000 less per year than a person who has finished high school. Over the course of a lifetime, that can add up to nearly $200,000. Clearly, the reasons for going back to high school are quite compelling.
