Your day begins early. You have to get your kids up and make sure that they’ve had breakfast and gotten dressed. You go to work all day, where your phone rings off the hook, you have fires to put out, and difficult customers to soothe. You come home to make dinner for your kids, bathe them, and get them in bed on time. The next day, the process starts all over again. And weekends can be even more hectic.
These days, there are few things that you can’t buy, and almost as few that you can’t buy online. Name an item, no matter how obscure, and you’re just a few mouse clicks away from locating it (a quick visit to eBay will verify this right away). If you can’t buy something on the Internet, chances are it cannot be purchased at all.
In today’s global marketplace, finding a decent, well-paying job can be as difficult as it is important. Between the high cost of living, inflation, and a dozen other external financial reasons, making enough money to support both you and your family is harder now than ever before. It used to be that a modicum of real-life experience was enough to get a decent-paying job; now, such experience is rarely enough on its own.
There are some things that we just can’t live without. There are the easy ones–food, shelter, clothing. Then there are the ones that are unique to each person. While one person may not be able to live without her favorite slippers, another person can’t live without strawberry ice cream. The numbers are staggering: people who finish high school earn an average of $7,000 more per year than people who don’t. That can mean upwards of $300,000 over the course of your lifetime, or even more if you continue your education after high school. For financial purposes alone, there are good reasons to go back and get your degree. Another is pride. Chances are most people you know finished school, and chances are that you might feel a bit inadequate around these people–however much that may not be the case.
It used to be that separating younger people from older ones required little more than administering a simple test: could they program a VCR? Today, VCR savvy has been replaced by knowledge of–or fear of–computers. We all probably know somebody who is petrified of computers, just as we all know people (probably many people) who are as comfortable in front of a computer as a koala is in a tree.
Each year one in 10 high school students decides not to finish his or her education. And these numbers are even more alarming for African-Americans and Latinos, with numbers rising to three in 10. These individuals often find themselves unable to compete in the modern workplace, with the emphasis upon highly skilled, highly educated workers. By and large, the jobs that are available are the menial ones, the ones that require the least education, and offer the least satisfaction. These are the sorts of jobs that require long hours for little pay, and that offer little chance for advancement. It’s hard enough making your own way in circumstances like these, but if you’re trying to raise a family, times may be tough indeed.
According to recent studies, high school dropout rates among people aged 16 to 24 decreased from 1980 to 2001. In 1980, the rate was 14.1 percent, but the 2001 rate, at 10.7 percent, is still far too high. And the number gets even higher for African-Americans and Latinos. In fact, Latinos have the highest overall dropout rate, at nearly 30 percent.
Modern media–and particularly, the advent and explosive rise of the Internet–brings the outside world, in all its dazzling diversity, right into our very homes. In few areas has this transformation had a more profound affect than in the realm of education.
Modern life has brought us advances in nearly every field, in every area of our lives. But for the past decade or so, when people have thought of technological advances, the first thing that has typically come to mind has been the increased role of computers. More specifically, the one thing that has changed our lives more than any other over the past ten years is the Internet.
For a parent, there are few prouder moments than when your children grow up and graduate from high school. This is, after all, the culmination of thirteen long years of education. This achievement, especially as signified by the graduation ceremony, represents a turning point in a person’s life, the line between adolescence and adulthood.
Hardship can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live, how much you make, or how old you are–hard times can strike everyone equally and indiscriminately. For some people, hard times can hit when they are in high school. A parent can die suddenly, or have an accident, or any number of other tragedies can occur. This may leave no choice but to drop out of school and start earning money. Look at nearly any political campaign, and you’ll find that the candidates say that education is their number one priority. This extends across party lines and geographic areas. Education plays in California as well as Georgia, in New York as well as Nebraska. And why is education such an important issue? That’s easy to answer: education provides the keys that unlock any number of doors later in life. It’s funny just how much a simple piece of paper can mean. The Declaration of Independence, The United States Constitution, The Emancipation Proclamation–these are all pieces of paper that have taken on much greater significance than the pulp they’re printed on. Thousands upon thousands of people visit museums that showcase original copies of these documents every year–and it’s not because of the fancy printing. It’s what these documents symbolize, what they mean beyond the words that are printed on them, or the paper they’re on.
Education is one of the most important weapons in any person’s arsenal. While having an education–in the form of a high school diploma or even more advanced education–is no guarantee of success, not having an education is an almost sure way to avoid success. Employers today look for workers with a broad range of skill sets, and without the proper education, you may find yourself passed over for the good jobs–the ones with the best pay, the best benefits, and the best chance for advancement. In other words, the jobs that can best provide for you and your family.
